Small Little Fiesta

Since moving back to Portland, I haven't had the opportunity to do many events (persoal or professional). Things have been so hectic, that part of my life and business didn't get a lot of love. That all changed last weekend. I had the honor of hosting a small little fiesta in honor of my Mom turning the big 60. (Yup, I just put her age on blast for the whole world wide web to see.)

sorry mom

I am guessing she should be too upset, because 60 is YOUNG especially to have 4 grown kids and still be kicking butt and taking names like a boss. I digress.

As most of you have probably experienced in your own life, buying a gift for your Mom is not always the easiest thing in the world to do. For most of their "mom existence" they get the short end of the stick, what with clay sculptures of their kids hands and macaroni art work. As I have gotten older, there are some years it is easier than others, a good concert or show comes to town, SCORE. But this was 60. I can't just run into Chico's and get her a chic outfit for the modern woman, that was so 59.

I made an attempt to rent a dance floor for the ladies but my yard is not yet level so it didn't look or feel the way it should but it definitley got me excited about the idea of a permanent dance floor in my backyard. PROJECT!

It was for this reason that I chose to do one of the things I do best, host a little shin-dig. Apparently my mom and her friends are way cooler and more popular than I am because trying to nail down schedules was not the easiest task so at the last minute I just picked a date and hoped for the best. Sadly that meant some awesome ladies couldn't make it but we soldiered on.

If you read my last post you know that I am in a new house. What you may not know is that they house needs a LOT of work still but I figured if we did something on a warm summer night in the unfinished back yard and added some pretty lights I could probably get away with a good evening.

Sorry potential stalkers, I blocked out my address. A girls has gotta  be safe, ya know.

I chose an easy and quick theme and hurried to create an invitation that would be festive and fun. Who doesn't want to attend a "fiesta"? I mean the word, the colors, the yummy food? It is just a guaranteed winner. So I sent it out to all my Mom's favorite lady peeps.

Then the real work began...menu and trying to figure out how to make my "really needs work" backyard into something halfway decent and worthy of the "fiesta" title.

getting crafty

I would like to say that this paint is actually awesome. I have used it for a ton of other projects, it just didn't provide the sheen I wanted for the paper pinata...Love Krylon Paint though.

I tried to get crafty. Thanks to Pinterest, I always TRY and get craft...but my stuff NEVER looks like it does on Pinterest. I decided I would paint some pinatas and make them gold because in case you can't tell from my logo...

i love gold

My before pictures were great, ahh the best intentions, but forgot to take any after pics, so this is the after, after, a few days later...gold scottie dogs.

While they didn't turn out horrible, I totally used the wrong style of paint so it came out a little dull. I also totally forgot to take the eyeballs of the pinata first so with out eyeballs and color, they looked more like gold scottie dogs. Again, not awful but not what I was going for. I added some pink tassels and they still did the job. Sadly, this was not my first epic fail of the night.

I won't bore you with too many of the details but I figure the sign of any good party is the food and the booze so I thought I would at least share the menu with you and one of the epic fails related to the food. I found a great recipe. where else? Pinterest. It was for shrimp & chorizo skewers.

yum

First, let me tell you that i accidentally download ransomwaer software on my computer earlier the week. Because of that I lost every single file on my computer. OH YEAH, every single one. Crushing for my work. BUT, one of the lost files was my party planning deck. Yes, I am that kind of nerdy planner. Without it, my week completely got away from me and nothing happened as it should have.

I not longer had my shopping list so I had to pull up the Pinterest pages while at the grocery store. Once there, the simple recipe I thought I found looked much more complicated and with way to many ingredients but I had already go the meat from the butcher so I did the unthinkable...

i wung it.

long story short. my skewers disintegrated on the grill. (yes I soaked them first but still...) I used some quick thinking, took it off the grill, sauteed it added some garlic, butter and cheese...turned out delicious.

phew

The party never would have come together with out the help of a friend of mine from Purple Lilly Events. Toni helped with some of the food and the amazing cake. In general she was a life saver. Toni does all sorts of events but specializes in weddings. Check out her site by clicking her company name above.

That's it. It was a wrap. Happy Birthday to my wonderful Mom and big shout to all the ladies who attended and those who couldn't. It was a great night and such an awesome way to christen my new home for events.

till next week,

learning something new, don't be scared, no talent required

We have all heard the quote from Eleanor about doing things that scare us but what about just learning new things, even if they don't scare us? Don't worry I'm not now going to list all of the reasons you should learn something new. Well, full disclosure I WAS going to do that but as I started to research the topic I noticed that the only stuff I could find was stuff from other blogs. Apparently it is a popular thing to blog about. Rather than join the crowd and list all these stats and information, I am instead going to share my experience learning something new recently.

Most of my siblings are very artsy and crafty. While I have spent most of my life trying to be artsy, it never quite came to fruition. That being said, I never stop trying. It is for this reason that I recently decided to take a class in calligraphy. I see all these people on blogs and instagram that do the coolest stuff with their handwriting and that is NOT what my handwriting looks like so I figured why not try something new?

If I'm going to learn something new, I'm not just gonna let anyone teach me, I need the best. Enter Laura Hooper Calligraphy's workshop in Washington DC. Laura is at the top of her game and still makes time to teach people around the country all about her craft. It was a great day full of beautiful flowers by EightTreeStreet Floral Design, ONEHOPE wine, Belvoir Fruit Farms, snacks and a fantastic space at Karson Butler Events DC.

Here are a few great pictures of the day courtesy of AnDCreatives
