I know I should have shared my goals with you before the 1st of the year and for that I apologize. If I am being honest, I started to a number of times but realized that like me, most of you probably were busy with friends and family and the hullabaloo that comes with the holiday and might not have the time to read blogs. So, I made the choice to wait until things settled a bit. 

This last step in the process is a little intense so I decided to only share with you one goal from each of my areas of focus. This way, you would be able to see the depth of information you should assign to each goal without getting mired in reading a 20 page blog entry.  


Health & Wellness

To Lose 25 Pounds by April 6, 2016

Goal:


Walk 10,000 steps or more each day

Eat 9 fruits or vegetables daily

No Fast Food

There you have it. A goal for each of my areas of focus in 2016. Hopefully this helps you commit your goals to paper and get 2016 off to a great start. Thanks for sticking with the 31 day goal setting challenge and sharing your experiences with me in the comments, emails and in social media. 2015 was a strange and interesting year. There were a lot of changes in my life with health and work and even location but I know like most storms, clear skies are ahead. Thank you for sticking with me and showing interest in what I have to say and helping be a witness to my adventure. Looking forward to great things in 2016.

Ready...Set...GOAL

The time has come. Self reflection has occurred and now we need to get to work. This s the hard part because you actually have to put pen to paper and plan.

I would love to tell you that I did this but THIS IS NOT MINE. I found it online and was like WOAH, holy moly this person is a    talented doodler.

I mean we have all these ideas but generally when it is time to put them to paper they just fly right out of our minds. I hate when that happens. Here is what I do. I am a scribbler. I cannot seem to focus on anything unless there is a piece of paper in front of me and I can scribble, doodle or just in general make the ink move across the page. OH YES, I was the girl who wrote down the name of my crush on my notebook a hundred times surrounded  by hearts. I even have old projects from school like a wooden toolbox that is scribbled all over with the names of boys, cool phrases (well I thought they were cool in the 7th grade) and miscellaneous other things I cant even decipher all these years later. The same can be said for my work notes. I never have to wonder about someone stealing my secrets because you would need a decoder ring to get through my notes.

strangely though, this is actually productive for me. It channels my thoughts and somewhere in the mess of undecipherable doodles and hearts galore, a plan takes place. Now I realize that not everyone's brain works the same way mine does BUT I am here telling you what works for me, so it can't hurt to try right?

So get some sort of notebook (hopefully, the same one you have been using for your reflections the last 16 days). Sit in front of the TV or some other form of entertainment that is relaxing yet not too intense. (In other words, watch mindless TV that doesn't require too much attention...no back episodes of Game of Thrones, Lost or House of Cards here, you don't want to get too distracted.) The distraction here is actually your notebook NOT the tv.

Every few seconds, write something down. It can be a sentence, a word, a cute little drawing, whatever you want. It should however be related to something you would like to do next year. Maybe it is small like "lost 20 pounds". Maybe it is bigger like "get a raise" or "have a baby". Doesn't matter. No further details are needed today. All you have to do is scribble all the possibilities. We will dig into them later and organize them into something that looks like goals with real tangible action items to them. For now just scribble and jot things down. No pressure. Not coming up with anything, look up at the tv and laugh along with Leonard and Sheldon. Turn on some music, grab a hairbrush and dance around the room a bit...boom idea comes to you, jot it down and keep dancing. 

The only rule...try to fill AT LEAST one who piece of paper with your thoughts. If it takes a couple days, that's ok. Just keep your notebook near by and grab it when an inspiring thought hits you. 

That's it. Wednesday goal setting work complete. We are at the half way point everyone. That means we are about to finish the year ahead of the game because we are going to have a plan for 2016 that takes us all to the next level.

My apologies, I got a little excited there. If you did raise the roof and say "what what", my sincerest gratitude. If you didn't, give it time, you might get excited as you start writing things down. For those that did it but don't want to admit it...it's ok, I get it. Maybe next time.

it's never too late to take a step...

It is that time of year when weekends become filled with holiday parties and to do lists. I hope you all had a minute to breathe in all of the hullabaloo. In the course of my buys weekend I may have come down with something. I have the whole swollen and sore gland situation and I am not enjoying it.

For this reason, sadly, today's post will be short and sweet. A few questions to ask yourself as we near the end of the "review" portion of our 31 day goal setting exercise.

What unfinished business did you want to resolve this year and when will you do it? We all say we are going to do things that get put to the side for one reason or another. For many of us there might be a long list of "to do" items that get put to the side. Try and think about what these are for yourself and put some dates to them? Are they things you want to pull into 2016? If, yes, put them aside to include in your goals as we get to that step. If you want to do them sooner than that, you still have 16 days of 2015 to get cracking. Maybe you can't finish but you can at least start and get some headway. What an awesome way to end the year feeling accomplished. 

As you think about these unfinished items, is there a reason you didn't finish them? Were they not important after all? Did you simply procrastinate? Did you have knee surgery and therefore couldn't get to the gym? Did you just forget? Really look at the reasons behind not getting these complete because it will help as we start setting new goals look at the motivation behind what helps you get things done.

I am going to now take some meds and hopefully sleep off this junk. Stay healhty peeps and don't forget to share as always.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I want to have a life of experiences.  I'm talking about big, scare the crap out of you, never regret missing out experiences. I do my best to do the things I have always wished I could do. Here’s the thing though, I let life get in the way sometimes.  I don’t know why, but I guess I just let fear and anxiety get in my way.  I suppose I’m not alone in this.  There’s a multi-million dollar book industry out there called “self help” to prove that I’m not alone.  We really are our worst enemy sometimes, or at the very least our biggest obstacle.

But why?

Why do we block our blessings when they are so obviously heading straight for us like a freight train? What are we so afraid of?  Better yet, how do we move past this type of thinking?  How do we move from fantasizing about the life we want and start living the life we want?

I saw this sign at the Denver airport that said “no waiting” and it suddenly clicked.  I now knew the answer to everything.  I took my picture which you can see below and went on my way.  For weeks afterward I sat myself down to reflect on what appeared so simple at the airport.  Only it didn’t seem so simple anymore.  “No Waiting”.  The phrase and the picture (a photographic gem if I do say so myself.  Thanks Hipstamatic) speak to me.  I just can’t seem to fully hear what the words are really saying.  It’s almost as if it is a whisper or worse, a riddle that I have to figure out.  It can’t really be that easy, can it?  Stop waiting? 

Or can it?

You can't just decide to STOP WAITING. You have to put some action into it. Here is part of my action...goal setting each year with intention. This is no joke, it's a long process and not done alone, you need accountbility when you stop waiting and we are not the best at doing that for ourselves.

What happens if we stop waiting?  Well…I suppose we stop waiting!  But what are we waiting for anyways?  Someone to tell us it’s okay to be happy, successful, content, delighted, loved?  Come on, we are grown ass men & women here (excuse my language).  We know our worth, right?  We know that we deserve all of those things I listed and much more, right? We tell our friends and loved ones all the time, that they deserve better than what they are accepting, don’t we believe the same for ourselves?

So, after a lot of time trying to complicate the matter I have decided to follow the direction of the sign, as I am convinced that it was just that, a sign.  I am not going to wait.  I’m gonna stop waiting for life to happen. I’m gonna stop waiting for someone to tell me what I think I want to hear.  I’m gonna stop waiting for something easy to come along.

Here is where I buried all my excuses. In the middle of the hike I found a spot. Took out a piece of paper and wrote all of the negative thoughts and things that were making me wait to live. I buried them in the sand, said a little prayer and left them there in the middle of that cold New Mexican Desert. And guess what?  Things started happening...

Now I’ve heard it all before, “you have to be patient” but I believe that there is a difference between patience and ambivalence.  I think people live lives of ambivalence a lot of the time, waiting for someone, anyone to tell them it’s okay to LIVE and enjoy life, to experience it in all of its glory. So I will exercise patience when it is needed, but I will no longer wait for the sake of waiting.

I’m going after the life I want.  I’m taking every opportunity to grab every piece of happiness, love, pure unadulterated joy, success and delight that I can and I’m bringing you with me, because…well why not?


Before I leave, I thought I would share a few quotes about waiting from some people who know/knew what they were talking about.

personal manifesto writing part 1

We all have a dream. Some of us have lots of them. We may not always realize that is what they are. We may avoid the work to make them come true. We may be lost as to how to make them a reality. Maybe you haven't unearthed what it is yet. But we all have a dream.

Dreams are what I focus on because it seems the only way to truly connect with people. Once you discover and chase your dream, you start to know more about who you really are and who you want to be. This in turn makes it easier to see who other people are, thus making connection simpler.

It is for that reason I continue to focus on creating a manifesto. Like any journey, it is crucial to have a plan, even a rough one. Let me be clear, having a plan does NOT mean that you will follow it to the letter. Oh gosh, the most fun things in life happen when the plan falls through. That being said though, having a general direction or map you can refer to along the way helps you make not only the right turns but the left ones that actually turn out to be right all along.

So what is supposed to go in to a manifesto?

That is the beautiful part. They can be short or long. They can be targeted to one particular thing or encompass all that you believe. They can change an infinite amount of times as you change and grow.  There is really only one rule to building a manifesto...

It must reflect who & what you are and challenge you to stretch yourself.

I should clarify, nowhere does it say that in the dictionary of manifesto's or online at some "how to site", Well...I don't think it does, I didn't actually look. So really, this is my belief and I realize some of you have just met me...so let me prove my point here.

Read brand manifesto's, or personal manifesto's from any and everyone. Take note of what is similar and what is different. They all have a call to action for the person(s) that is reading it. They all use positive language. They all aspire to something better. They almost always have a theme or direction even though it isn't always blatant. And they almost always show you what the person(s) ultimately wants to aspire to.

I promised in my previous post: Tips on How & Why Brands Use Manifesto's to Connect with Consumers that I would help us all focus on the steps to writing our own manifesto's and so today we start.

It doesn't need to be in a fancy journal or a perfectly handwritten list. It actually doesn't even have to make sense. But spend a day or better yet a week writing things down. Have scraps of paper or a notebook and a writing tool around at all times and when you have a thought...jot it down. 

I am a firm believer of visual and written goals. YES, I vision board, get over it. I know it works. Why wouldn't I do it? Don't believe me that writing things down helps? Check out the Positivity Blog and their 7 Powerful Reasons Why You Should Write Things Down. By the way, how cool is it that there is something called the POSITIVITY BLOG?

Anyway, if you are not yet comfortable with writing down your thoughts, why not choose visuals to represent them instead? Lots of people have image journals with little to no text because that is the way the learn and see the world. That is totally acceptable as well and if you are visually creative would probably look pretty great too. So search for things in your surroundings that represent what you believe and what you want.

Okay, so this is step one. All we will talk about today is step one because quite frankly it is the foundation for everything else. So spend this week collecting information, words, images and anything else that might help you to create your very own manifesto.
